I’d like to welcome authors Folami and Abeni Morris to DJ’s Book Corner as part of The Exemeus blog tour. Thank you for taking the time to come dish it up with me!

First question, when did you first know you wanted to be authors?
Abeni: I have loved writing since I was eight or nine years old. I wrote personally for myself or for school but I didn't think I would pursue being an author until my sister presented me with the idea for our book, The Exemeus. I was so intrigued that I couldn't pass up the opportunity to share this story with the world.
Folami: I knew at age seven that I wanted to be a writer. I would read books by authors and be disappointed by the endings. That's when I decided I would recreate the stories and make new endings of my own.

When did you write your first book?
Folami: If you mean my first book ever, I would have to say I was seven years old.
Abeni: I am pretty sure I was nine.

How fun is it working as a writing duo? What are some difficulties?
Abeni: For the most part, writing together as a duo is fun for us because not only are we sisters, but we're also the best of friends as well. Working as a duo, you get to bounce ideas off of one another and bring two visions together. What can be difficult is when our visions are drastically different and we have to find a medium to make each other happy.

Tell us a little about your fantasy series, The Exemeus.
Folami: Our book, The Exemeus, is about two characters, Dephon and Hyalee, growing up in two different time periods. Hyalee is fighting against a planet wide takeover by a militant government and Dephon lives in he world that results from her failure. The two words collide in unexpected ways and what results is The Exemeus. Clearly, that's the abridged version.

Sum the main character Hyalee Smith up in three words. Do the same for the mystic Dephon Johnson.
Folami and Abeni: To describe Hyalee, we would use the words strong, loyal, and loving. For Dephon, self-deprecating, loyal, and sarcastic.

If The Exemeus were a movie, what would be the perfect first song on the soundtrack?
That has to be one of the best questions we've ever had to answer. We would both have to say Cristofori's Dream by David Lanz.

What do you like best about writing fantasy?
We like that you can create a whole new world and you get to take your character(s) and your reader on this magical journey. You can be creative as you want without restriction. With fantasy, anything goes.

Do either of you need absolute quiet to write? Do you listen to music when you an there writing?
Abeni: Actually, I need peace and quiet to work unless soft music is playing in the background at a steady pace. My mind can sometimes run rampant like a 5 year old. The less distraction the better.
Folami: I, on the other hand, can work through a storm, a blizzard, or a monsoon and still maintain focus.

Who are three of your favorite authors? Books?
Abeni: My three favorite authors are Nora Roberts, Jane Heller, and Stephanie Meyers. My favorite books are Twilight, Infernal Affairs, and Wuthering Heights.
Folami: I love J.k. Rowling, Richelle Mead, and Jennifer Armentrout. I personally enjoyed the books Demon at Deadnight, Angel Fall, and I am going to cheat and say the whole Harry Potter series.

As authors, what is the best compliment either of you could receive from a reader?
Abeni: If a reader just told me I loved your book and I couldn't put it down that would be the ultimate compliment.
Folami: This is the best book I have ever read.

Last, but not least, my Super Silly Question: If you were descended from a long line of super heroes, what kind of super heroes would you be?
Folami: I would be Hyalee. I'd have the power to control things with my mind.
Abeni: You know I actually like that answer. I am going to say Hyalee as well, but for a slightly different reason. I just love the strength that she embodies as a superhero with an I-am-an-everyday-woman-flare. She makes me proud to be a woman.

Thanks so much!

No, thank you! This was such a great interview! Cristofori's Dream is a beautiful choice for a theme song. I simply adore anything Classical.

About Folami and Abeni Morris

Folami and Abeni Morris are a sister-sister writing team. Together they wrote (and rewrote) The Exemeus, somehow managing to accomplish it without murdering one another. Despite their facial similarities, tendency to finish each other’s thoughts and stick up for each other constantly, no, they’re not twins and thus deserve their own individual bio:

Folami grew up in the tiny city of San Mateo Ca, where nothing ever happens and no one ever leaves. She went to Xavier University for undergraduate, getting her B.A in physics and her B.S in Biology. After graduation she returned to California, to live in an even smaller city, where even less happens, Antioch Ca. During this time she escaped the monotony by hanging out with her imaginary friends Hyalee and Dephon, and by writing The Exemeus. She finally escaped to Queens NY and now realizes that quiet and tiny aren’t so bad.

As luck (and logic) would have it, Abeni grew up in the same tiny little town as her sister, then she too escaped to the tinier town of Antioch. She has yet to leave. She received her bachelor’s degree in early childhood development from Cal State East Bay. She is the mom of two amazing kids, who swear that they deserve a percentage of the book proceeds and a ton of the credit. At least she raised dreamers.
