Samantha Bevans is having the best sex of her life—but it's not with her husband. Fortunately for her marriage, the affair is all in her mind. Isn't it? As an empath, she senses other people's emotions. But her connection to the man with the the chiseled face and haunting eyes seems so real.

There's no time for fantasies with a serial killer loose in Pittsburgh. The killer is targeting dancers at a strip club where Samantha used to bartend, back when drugs were the only cure for the torment of her abilities. As a member of a special task force, Samantha uses her talents to sense the victims’ final thoughts. Just when she thought the case was complex enough, she discovers one of the victims was thinking about her fantasy man when she died.

Who can Samantha trust when she can’t trust her own mind? An empath feels the emotional environment around her…and Samantha is surrounded by death. (Goodreads)

I didn't know what to expect from this book, but what I got was a sexy, suspense-filled, kick ass novel that I simply couldn't put down, reminding me why I love paranormal romance so much! It's going to be hard to review this book without totally spoiling it, but I'll try my best.

At first, I didn't know what to make of it. Sam is having an affair, a pretty serious one, with a man in her dreams, which is weird enough on its own. But we weren't kept in nail-biting suspense for too long, as bits and pieces of what the truth behind her dreams really was.

MEET Mary Whitney

Even before she graduated from law school, Mary knew she wasn't cut out to be a real lawyer. Drawn to politics, she's spent her career as an organizer, lobbyist, and nonprofit executive. Nothing piques her interest more than a good political scandal or romance, and when she stumbled upon writing, she put the two together. A born Midwesterner, naturalized Texan, and transient resident of Washington, D.C., Mary now lives in Northern California with her two daughters and real lawyer husband.

EXCERPT:

“No British literature. Isn’t this supposed to be an English class?” Adam asked.

“Uh.” My ancestors would’ve been proud of the jolt of American patriotism that hit me. “There was a revolution two hundred years ago. We write our own books now.”

He leaned back in his seat with a smile. “I think I heard about that.”

“We still share the same language.”

“Sometimes I’m not too sure.”

“I bet not.” I could imagine what he thought of a Texas accent.

He picked up the list of books again. “What about Catcher in the Rye?”

“I read it a long time ago when I was, like, eleven.” I laughed a little as I remembered how I’d first come to read it.

“Is there something funny about that?”

“Yeah. My father had suggested I read it then. The book is the classic coming-of-age story. Clearly, he wasn’t really thinking about whether or not it was appropriate for an eleven-year-old.”

“Really? Why?”

“Well, for one thing, the main character is a guy who swears a lot.”

“I suppose I swear a lot.” He cracked a sly smile. “At least compared to you Yankees.”

“Yankees? You’re in the South.” I laughed.

“What else is inappropriate about the book? Now I’m interested. It can’t only be a few swear words.”

“No, it’s not just that. It’s…” I hesitated for a moment as I realized I was about to bring up the topic of sex with Adam Kincaid. What the hell, I thought. I should be matter-of-fact about it. He had a girlfriend and would never want anything with me. I could hide I thought he was hot, so I shrugged. “Holden, the main character…he’s a little sexually frustrated.”

His eyes twinkled, and it felt as if my words hung in the air. I wanted to squirm in my seat. ‘Sexually frustrated’—like me checking out Adam Kincaid.

His proper upbringing showed again as he sidestepped the issue, yet he smirked. “That sounds like an
adventurous book to be on an American high school syllabus.”

“Like I said—it’s considered an American classic.” I laughed. “I guess some things are sacred.”

“But of course.” The gleam appeared in his eye again, and he turned toward me in his seat. “Teenage sexual frustration is sort of a rite of passage, if you will.”

There went the good-English-boy manners out the window. His tone, the look in his eye, his body language—was he flirting with or taunting me? I decided the former was impossible, and if the latter, I wasn’t going to back down. With two parents who were lawyers, debate was a family routine.

“A rite of passage? More like a biological fact, isn’t it?” I asked, casually clicking my pen. I raised a
brow. “Especially for guys.”

“You’re right about that,” he said with a grin.

His eyes shifted downward, and I could feel him give me a once-over. I wondered what he thought. I was no Meredith, but I had enough self-confidence to know I wasn’t butt-ugly either—even with my scars. I couldn’t tell, but he’d distracted me so much, I jumped when I heard Mrs. Anderson ask, “Your name, dear?”

✰✰✰

The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi-pure-bloods-have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals-well, not so much.

Half-bloods only have two options: become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures. Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway. There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow.

Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1:Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden. Unfortunately, she's crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn't her biggest problem--staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is. If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden. And that would kind of suck. (Goodreads)

I read this book months and months ago and I'm just now reviewing it. I apologize. I started this series after I read the first two Lux books and there's really no comparison. Lux rules, but this series is far from the worst reads list. In fact, I like it. But how can I not? It's Greek mythology.

MEET Danyelle Leafty

Danyelle Leafty writes upper MG and YA fantasy, and is the author of THE FAIRY GODMOTHER DILEMMA series. Danyelle has always loved fairy tales, and prefers stories where someone gets eaten, or at the very least, transmogrified. Much of her inspiration has come from fairy tales, because as G.K. Chesterton so aptly states, "Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten."

In her spare time, she collects dragons, talking frogs, and fairy godmothers. She also collects books, and one day hopes to make a house out of them. She enjoys learning languages, fiddling with her harp, and perfecting the fine art of mothering. (It's a lot like trying to herd chickens during a lightning storm while a goat stampede is going on.)

One of her heroes is Albert Einstein, particularly for the following quote: "Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The most important thing is not to stop questioning."

Two men suffering from visible and invisible wounds meet by chance circumstance.

Nick Traynor and Ian Donovan spend a lot of time and effort keeping it very hot, only physical, and purely superficial. But when their resolve starts to slip, a woman is tossed into their midst.

Hannah Williams wants nothing more than to do her job until something better comes along, but is forced to own up to her visceral reaction to Ian, her new boss, and later to Nick, his sometimes lover.

Lust has a funny way of turning into companionship, and eventually evolving into a deeper connection. Faced with the internal and external complications of their potential three-way relationship, they begin to heal and trust, to consider that it might work. Then life tosses them a hardball, forcing them back into their respective corners, where each must choose what is most important.

Three people determined not to commit, thrown together by fate and undeniable attraction--their nights heat up and emotions run high in spite of a claimed mutual desire to "keep it simple." In the process of honest self-discovery, can they learn that while love is never simple, it is definitely worth fighting for? (Goodreads)

Call me a freak, but I knew I would like this book. Yeah, the menage was fun to witness but there was an actual plot filled with real emotions and drama. That's so important in a book like this, and the author  got it right.

Ian is the first character we meet and I liked him from the jump. At first he seems very aware of his weaknesses and his strengths, but of course, as the book wears on, we find out he doesn't know himself all that well at all. The only thing he is sure about is that he is bi-sexual. I will be honest, I don't believe in bi-sexuality. Either you're gay or you're not. Not that I care either way. But if I was ever convinced that someone could truly be bi-sexual, Ian would have convinced me. I really believed he loved both Nick and Hannah with all of his soul.

Whew! This book is dirty!
Free-spirited musician Letty Dillinger adheres to a strict, “no strings attached” policy when it comes to men. After a wild night of unabashed sex in a fancy hotel room, she never expects to see the adventurous stud she dubs “Shades” again. When her all-girl rock trio books a tour at the last minute as the opening act for their archenemies, Letty’s shocked to discover she knows the competition’s new lead singer. Intimately. Shades is no longer a one-night stand. Now he’s the guy she has to one-up on stage every night for the sake of her career.

Sharing close quarters on a bus with her sexy nemesis and his bad-boy buddies puts Letty’s Golden Rule to the test. On this tour, guitar strings aren’t the only things being played. And when heartstrings are pulled too hard, they’re bound to snap sooner or later. (Goodreads)

The funniest thing about this book has got to be the author herself. This is the warning placed at the beginning of this synopsis for Strings.

WARNING: STRINGS is not suitable for slut shamers, uptight stone throwers, Holier-Than-Thou prudes, humorless virgins, persons with chronic neck or back pain, pearl-clutching bitties, those who disparage crude humor or vulgarity in their many forms, closed-minded people with sticks up their asses, or anyone under the age of 18. The vile, base language and shocking, unholy sexual acts contained herein are not condoned by anyone with a lick of sense and should certainly not be reproduced without proper training and protection. The potty-mouthed and perpetually horny "heroine" (the term is used loosely) of this book does not resemble a normal, well-adjusted, or remotely believable person in any way, shape, or form. The author acknowledges that the characters in this book are shallow and two-dimensional; the plot is both ridiculous and insipid. She makes no apologies for any of it.

* Readers are strongly advised to wear latex gloves whilst reading to minimize contamination risks.

Is she serious? Oh yeah. I do believe she is. I'll have you know, this alone got me to buy this book. Not only was it hilarious, it was BOLD. And to be honest, I should have paid more attention to it before jumping into this book. I think I may just be traumatized for life.

"My name is Letty Dillinger, and I was born to rock your face off."

"Vile" and "Unholy" don't even begin to describe this book. Yet, it's exactly what made this book rock. Miss Grey didn't hold back one bit and literally, anything went.

The author said her plot was ridiculous, and it was, but I actually kind of liked it. Yeah, the characters were shallow (and amateur porn stars) but I liked them because I think in real life more people act like them than the holier-than-thou characters in some of these books. Real talk. How many of us have that friend that we would NEVER introduce anyone raised with morals to? Get your hand up because we all do. That friend is in this book, I promise you.

Outside of the absolutely disgusting descriptions of Letty's private parts, I liked the drama and the tension that ran the entire length of Strings. I thought Letty and Shades were so SEXY together, and not only that, they were funny. I mean, for real. They kept me laughing. And the other characters, especially Rax were just as entertaining as they were annoying. I mean, as far as total smut goes, the hilarity can't get any better than this.

Grey didn't forget that her characters were rockers and there was plenty of rock n' roll to mix in. Of course, Letty was a vile beast on stage as well. But it all WORKED. That's the point I'm trying to get across. It was a FILTHY book but it never tried to be more than that, and that's why I liked it.

The next book in the series is Beats and I think it features Jinx, the Cherry Buzz Float drummer. Oh boy, the way her and Toombs were eye-balling each other throughout this book, it's going to be ON in Beats. Book 3 is called Nocturnes. Have no idea who this one will be about, but I honestly don't care. I'll be reading it regardless because that's just the sort of messed-up freak I am.

EXCERPT
Alex walked around and opened Clair’s door, helping her out as she jumped down. He followed her as she walked to the far end of the yard and sat in the grass. Lying back, she looked up toward the black sky. Alex laughed as he looked down at her. “You know, if you’re that tired, I can get my blanket out of the car for you.”

Clair gave a small smile, tapping the grass beside her with her hand. “I miss it, ya know?”

“Miss what?” he asked, sitting beside her.

“I don’t know, the quietness, the stars. It’s just different. I know, it sounds stupid… it’s just, I’ve been on my own for so long without anyone caring. It’s a little overwhelming having someone care about me now; especially when they hardly know me. Everything Roz has done, I mean, who even does that?”

Alex watched her. She was so animated when she talked. Her face lit up with expressions, her hands waved through the air as if she needed them to help her communicate. Everything was light and easy going until dinner was over. Since the drive home, Clair seemed sad, but Alex let her ramble, venting whatever was bottled up inside her.

“And you,” she said, looking over at Alex, “if it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t be here.” Clair sat up, crossing her legs up under her. “And this date—I mean, this hanging out we did tonight. It was the best night I’ve had since I left home. Thank you for that.” She picked blades of grass with her fingers, tearing them into tiny pieces. “You didn’t have to take me out, but you did it anyway.”

His eyes traveled up her arms to her neck. Her skin looked so fair and soft under the moonlight, it made him want to run his hands over it. “You don’t have to thank me. I wanted to take you out tonight. I’m happy you said yes. It’s been quite some time since I’ve been out on date.” Yes, a date. He didn’t want to just “hang out”; no, he wanted to know everything about her. To hold her hand, touch her skin, and taste her lips. But would she want the same things as he? He still didn’t know.

“Oh, and this,” she said, holding the charm out from around her neck, “you shouldn’t have bought me this. But I do love it. Thank you.”

Alex leaned forward, taking the charm between his fingers. “I’m glad I saw you looking at it. It looks perfect on you.” He laid the charm down against her chest. Lightly, he traced his fingers up the side of her neck, her hair cupped around her face. Alex stared straight into her eyes, dark under the night’s sky. Her lips parted slightly and Alex could feel her breath quicken on his skin. He wanted nothing more than to feel her lips on his. He slipped his hand further up Clair’s neck and heard her breath catch as if she’d stopped breathing. With his face only inches away from her mouth, he whispered, “If you don’t want me to kiss you right now, you’d better tell me.”

Murder on Olympus by Robert B. Warren

Publication Date: April 11, 2013
Genre: Mythological Mystery
Series: Plato Jones #1
Source: Received from publisher in exchange for an honest review

DeeJay's Rating: 4/5 STARS

At first glance, the Gods of Olympus are as different from one another as salt is from sugar. Despite their bickering, they share a universal bond, a thread of commonality that unites them.

They’re all jerks.

After a stint with the Olympic Bureau of Investigation, Plato Jones is through with the Gods and their political games. Against his protests, he's drawn into a murder investigation, where the murderer's targets are the Gods themselves.

Plato has cracked some tough cases: exposing cheating spouses, capturing treasonous heretics, hunting three-headed dogs. But this time he’s in over his head. How can he solve a crime that’s impossible to commit? And what chance does Plato—a mere mortal—have against something powerful enough to kill a God? (Goodreads)

As someone who likes to read mythology books as much as I like to write them, I had pretty high expectations for this book. And guess what? This book met them. It was fun, HILARIOUS, and full of up-to-no-good Greek gods!

A fallen boxer.
A woman with a broken dream.
A competition…

He even makes me forget my name. One night was all it took, and I forgot everything and anything except the sexy fighter in the ring who sets my mind ablaze and my body on fire with wanting…

Remington Tate is the strongest, most confusing man I’ve ever met in my life.

He’s the star of the dangerous underground fighting circuit, and I’m drawn to him as I’ve never been drawn to anything in my life. I forget who I am, what I want, with just one look from him. When he’s near, I need to remind myself that I am strong–but he is stronger. And now it’s my job to keep his body working like a perfect machine, his taut muscles primed and ready to break the bones of his next opponents . . .

But the one he’s most threatening to, now, is me.

I want him. I want him without fear. Without reservations.

If only I knew for sure what it is that he wants from me? (Goodreads)

I've never been the biggest fan of contemporary romance novels. But I've been fortunate to get my hands on a few good ones as of late. Real was one of the best of them. I consumed this book in one day and at the end I simply had no words. It was magnificent, and everything a contemporary romance should be.

I loved Brooke Dumas right from the start. She was smart, funny and full of personality, on top of being damaged and a bit broken. Talk about REAL. Brooke was a representation of every woman alive and I know that's what sold me on her. And her BFF Melanie? Awesome. Loved her. She reminds me of one of my own best friends. Loud, bubbly, and no matter how many times you put in the request, she'll never sit down and shut the hell up.

Remington "Riptide" Tate was just too delicious for anything good to come of it. I mean, the man was pure liquid nooky in a bottle and all I wanted to do was get drunk off of him! Clearly, Brooke felt the same way:

"…I'm so thirsty he could feed me his kiss all night and I'd still be dying in the desert." –Brooke

Couldn't have said the shit better myself, girl.

But there was so much more to Remy than just his Greek god-like looks and amazing ability to whoop ass. He was deep and complex, and carrying around a secret that had already altered his life in so many ways, and also threatened to alter Brooke's. He was also protective and possessive, and not always in ways I liked. But again, it all fed back into his secret, and in the end, I understood. Not sure I could handle a relationship like this, but maybe that says more about me than the characters.

I loved the progression of the romance (no INSTA-LOVE here!) and how it never felt rushed. I totally believed it and bought into it. At the end, I felt their love was so REAL and not contrived or forced at all. That is so important to me in romance novels, and I don't read enough slow-progressing love stories. It's all "Bang me NOW! Love me TODAY!" This book was so refreshing, I can't even tell you. And the way they expressed their love by playing songs for each other? Talk about cute as shit!

The only (minor) problem I had with this book was the over-description of Remy's hotness. After a few chapters of Brooke's incessant drooling over Remy's tight ass and perfect cock, you almost want to throw away that bottle of nooky just so you won't have to read anymore of her body bragging. But that was not even a big enough issue to make me actually dislike this book. Still adored it.

Overall, FANTASTIC book Evans wrote here. I would recommend it to all lovers of romance, contemporary or not. You won't even care there's no blood-sucking or werewolves pissing in circles to stake a claim. You'll LOVE this book! And if you don't, yeah, nobody cares. I am absolutely craving Mine, book two. Why doesn't it have a cover yet???? UGH!! So cruel!!

Katy Evans grew up with book-boyfriends until she found a real sexy boyfriend to love, married him, and now they are hard at work on their own happily ever after. Katy loves her family and friends, and she also loves reading, walking, baking, and being consumed by her characters until she reaches "The End." Which, is hopefully, only the beginning...

website, Twitter, or Facebook, she'd
also love to hear from you!

I'm happy to be participating in the David's Song Blog Tour hosted by I Am A Reader, Not A Writer (a blog I LOVE). Today, I get to interview the author of David's Song, A.R. Talley! Check it out!

I’d like to welcome author A.R. Talley to DJ’s Book Corner. Thank you for taking the time to come dish it up with me.
Thanks for having me!

First question, when did you first know you wanted to be an author?
Being an author kind of snuck up on me. I didn't know I wanted to be one until I sat down one day to write a story that had been milling around in my head. I have had that from time to time in the course of my life.  I wish someone had told me earlier to write it down, then I could have enjoyed writing for much longer.

Genre: Paranormal Romance
Series: Vampire King #1
Source: Author for Honest Review

DeeJay's Rating: 3.5/5 STARS

A domina’s only purpose in life was to birth vampire children for the Quiet King. Any human woman with the domina gene spent their lives in the castle under strict rules and the guards’ watchful eyes. Brie has been a domina for two years. After witnessing the slaughter of babies, she plans to escape and seeks help from Samuel, a vampire known for aiding many out of slavery.

However, Samuel has only one policy. He won’t help dominas escape the king. The penalty is too high and their blood triggers powers in him that he doesn’t want released. So Brie is forced to lie about being a domina and Samuel is lured in by her blood. Something emerges within them that they can’t deny, overwhelming their every cell and igniting an all-consuming hunger that neither can flee. (Goodreads)

I received this book for review months before I became a part of the Vampire King blog tour, so looks like I was always destined to read Escape! It was a short, fast-paced read that I liked, but didn't necessarily love.

When I say it was fast-paced, that's what I mean. It might have been too fast for me, because I was hoping for more character development in regards to Brie's and Samuel's characters. However, I liked Brie and Sam! Brie was spunky and headstrong, and Sam was broody and mysterious. Great combo! I just wished there had been a little bit more character-building throughout the story so at the end, I felt like I really knew them.

I really liked the premise of human dominas serving the Quiet King as his personal "vampire baking centers". Thought that was pretty cool as it was a new take on the whole vampire thing that I had never really seen before. Then there was the whole bit about how male vampire babies are killed when they are born so there is no competition for the King. Also cool.

I liked how Brie's adventure started right away (always a plus), but what I didn't like *dooms day music* was the INSTA-LOVE. Insta-love always drives me crazy! I understand instant attraction and instant "I wanna do you, here and now". That actually makes sense to me, especially where vampires are concerned. But to say you LOVE someone, vamp or not, after only a few days just baffles me. I come across it so much in romance novels and each time I groan when it happens. However, I'm not saying the love isn't genuine, it's just going to take me a lot longer to believe it's real, than a love that grows naturally over a more realistic period of time.

I also wanted to see more of Sam's vampish abilities. More blood-sucking, more throats being ripped out, something! I absolutely loved the little plot twist that involves him. It's revealed toward the end of the book and when it happened I remembered asking myself, should I have seen that one coming?

Overall, quick, sexy read (with illustrations!), and I'm anxious to find out what happens next with Brie and Sam in Captured and Freed.

Meet Kenya Wright

Kenya Wright always knew she would be famous since the ripe old age of six when she sang the Michael Jackson thriller song in her bathroom mirror. She has tried her hand at many things from enlisting in the Navy for six years as a Persian-Farsi linguist to being a nude model at an art university.

However, writing has been the only constant love in her life. Will she succeed? Of course.

For she has been coined The Urban Fantasy Queen, the Super Iconic Writer of this Age, The Lyrical Genius of Our Generation. Granted, these are all terms coined by her, within the private walls of her bathroom as she still sings the Michael Jackson thriller song.

Kenya Wright currently resides in Miami with her three amazing, overactive children, a supportive, gorgeous husband, and three cool black cats that refuse to stop sleeping on Kenya’s head at night.
