A reluctant superhero is on the hunt for a sidekick she doesn't want. An urban fantasy adventure story with a superhero twist. An essential novella for comic book fans.

Glitter and Trauma could have been a lot of things it’s not. It could’ve been loads of fun, crazy exciting, and two tons of hilarious. However, I found myself confused half of the time and wishing I had an explanation.

Day of Demons
by Colin F. Barnes

Publication Date: 4/09/12

Genre: Dark Fantasy Anthology

DeeJay's Rating:

Day of Demons is a collection of powerful stories featuring the conflict of demons and humans over the course of a day.

Read how one women’s inner-self awakens to unexpected and frightening consequences, or how a charismatic half-breed thief is forced to strike a deal with a pen-stealing imp. Read about a mother as she struggles to cope with a deadly, satanic bargain, and a sword-wielding anti-hero as he returns out of exile to face his demonic fate.

Nine stories, nine demons, nine authors. From fantasy, to horror, to contemporary fiction, this anthology will fright, delight and grip you with tales of daring-do, danger and of course — demons.(Goodreads)

When I decided to read and review this anthology of demon stories, I didn’t expect to actually like any of them. Yes, I was interested in the concept of a book like this, but didn’t think I would actually like it as much as I did. That being said, not all of the stories engaged me. In fact, a few of them were pretty boring.

Dishin' It Up with Ashley Hill (@PNormalSisters), author of The Harvesters. A YA #Horror!

I’d like to welcome author Ashley Hill, author of The Harvesters, to DJ’s Book Corner. Thank you for taking the time to come dish it up with me!

First question, when did you first know you wanted to be an author?
I don’t really know when but I do know in the last few years, since probably around 2010. It’s definitely been a journey; following, learning, and watching other authors publish themselves. Indie authors are what showed me this world more than anything else, so thanks you guys. Watching them and constantly writing, plotting myself brought me to the conclusion that I wanted my own work to be out there for all to see too.

So I read The Harvesters and enjoyed the plot, especially the twist at the end! Anxious to find out where that’s headed. What inspired you to write a YA Horror series as opposed to a more popular sub-genre?
I love horror! Love it! And my favorite holiday happens to be Halloween, so around that time in ’09, while of course watching a horror film (I believe House of Wax, the remake), the scene of Ashley finding Jason on the white metal table slammed into my head, starting this series for me.

Sum the main character Ashley up in three words.
Brave, badass, caring

If The Harvesters were a movie, what would be the perfect first song on the soundtrack? For some reason, The Kill by 30 Seconds to Mars comes to mind for me...
Oh boy, I knew this one was coming haha. I actually don’t have any soundtrack for The Harvesters but I do have one main song that helped me write this short story, Help I’m Alive by Metric. The beat is just perfect for those action scenes.

Do you need absolute quiet to write? Do you listen to music when you are writing?
If it’s quiet, it’s creepy and something is wrong haha. I’m so used to noise in my house that when it’s quiet it’s just weird. With my younger brother constantly on Xbox, our Alaskan malamutes running around the house, and TV on or two, plus I’ve always have to have music going on. So yeah, when I’m writing I must have a song on replay or multiples on replay for me to work.

Who are three of your favorite authors? Books?
Kelley Armstrong, Amanda Hocking, Tera Lynn Childs. I love the Ghost and The Goth series by Stacey Kade, Anna and the French Kiss, My Fair Godmother series by Janette Rallison, The Curse Girl by Kate Avery Ellison- just to name a few haha.

As an author, what is the best compliment you could receive from a reader?
Probably that I inspired someone. An author inspired me so if I could inspire someone and they tell me, then that would be the best compliment ever! I think most authors would agree.

Meet Ashley Hill

I'm a college student still trying to get a handle of the adult world. When I need to get away from it I lose myself in books, my own writing, and in spending time with my amazing boyfriend which he supports me to no end.

Finding my passion in books has led me to finding a passion in writing my own fictional stories back in 2009, I have turned this into a dream career and going one step further I would love to open up my own book store.

Quick...and "painful"

When she finds her boyfriend shackled to a white metal table Ashley feared for the worse.

On a small trip of dropping off a package for Jason’s father, the young couple never thought they would be running for their lives. Running away from supposedly friends whom in turned to be a family of harvesters.

Human harvesters and they are looking for something specific. And Ashley just might be the perfect match for that something. (Goodreads)

This was a VERY quick read. Barely thirty pages. Though I had some issues with the editing and wording and such, it packed a nice punch for such a tiny package.

Decent start to the series!

For Kaeden Parish, life in Solace has always followed certain rules—everything makes sense, everything can be planned for, and everything is as it seems. Unfortunately, the secret harbored by his gorgeous, albeit guarded girlfriend is about to shatter all of that.

After a successful attack on his life opens his eyes to a world of war, shadows, and supernatural creatures—a world he didn’t plan for—Kaeden finds himself resembling the sort of monster he has always feared. As he desperately struggles to resist a new temptation, danger draws ever nearer, threatening the ones he loves most. A prophecy tells of a final battle and great destruction, and Kaeden must decide which side he is on, a choice that could mean the end of the world.

In Book 1 of the Solace Series, P.K. Gallagher pulls readers into a realm where good and evil are at war, and the outcome of it all rests on one young man’s decision to either go and live...or stay and die.

This is where Parish begins.(Goodreads)

I almost decided not to read this one because for some crazy reason, I had no idea it was about vampires. Yes, I am a vampire lover, but I chose this book because I thought it was going to offer something completely different. I don't usually read too many reviews before I read a book, but if I had, I might have known. Oh well. Book is read now and it wasn't too bad at all.

Ever heard of "Nice Nasty"?

For months, shy drummer Jinx Hardwick has been silently crushing on her tall, dark, and scary bandmate, Toombs Badcock. Drawn to his frightening ink and scars, she yearns to uncover the shadowy secrets lurking behind his silver eyes, but Jinx is too intimidated to even look at him, let alone talk to him. When she stumbles upon Toombs and their manipulative lead guitarist Rax in a compromising position, Jinx realizes her chances of winning Toombs’s heart aren’t just a long shot—they’re nonexistent.

To make matters worse, Jinx’s family needs her at home. She’s about to back away from it all—Toombs, the band, her dreams of fame and fortune—when Rax makes her an offer she can’t refuse: a no-holds-barred night alone with Toombs. There’s one small catch. She has to go through Rax to get it. (Goodreads)

Beats came with another most hilarious warning attached to it, just like Strings did.

To the point and full of action!

It's been six weeks since angels of the apocalypse descended to demolish the modern world. Street gangs rule the day while fear and superstition rule the night. When warrior angels fly away with a helpless little girl, her seventeen-year-old sister Penryn will do anything to get her back.

Anything, including making a deal with an enemy angel.

Raffe is a warrior who lies broken and wingless on the street. After eons of fighting his own battles, he finds himself being rescued from a desperate situation by a half-starved teenage girl.

Traveling through a dark and twisted Northern California, they have only each other to rely on for survival. Together, they journey toward the angels' stronghold in San Francisco where she'll risk everything to rescue her sister and he'll put himself at the mercy of his greatest enemies for the chance to be made whole again. (Goodreads)

After being traumatized by that Fallen bullshit written by Lauren Kate, I didn't think another angel book could keep my interest, let alone leave me wanting to read the next book. But here I am, quite intrigued to read the next book in this series, World After.

Can you say, DRAMA?

Nineteen year old Emily wants her college diploma fast, and she's going to get it. But when the perfect night with perfect Mitch leads her to a broken heart, Emily is blind to her vulnerability. When the person she cares about the most is hurt as a result, Emily's ambition gives way to more than a little ruthlessness. She's going to use her smarts to take care of herself and protect the people she loves, and everyone else had better stay out of her way. But shouldn't the smartest girl everyone knows realize that the ones she'd cross the line for would do the same for her? (Goodreads)

It’s no secret that I’m a lover of paranormal romances and not as big a fan of contemporary romance. I was surprised that I liked this book as much as I did, though I can’t really call it a “romance”. It’s more like a drama-filled whirlwind!
