D is for Daedalus #atozchallenge

Unknown Greek Myth #4: Daedalus

Daedalus was the legendary inventor who built the (in)famous labyrinth often mentioned in the ancient myths. The labyrinth was home to many horrors, including the Minotaur, and was commissioned by the King of Crete, Minos. When Minos tried to keep Daedalus imprisoned in the labyrinth so no one of significance could learn of his talents, Daedalus built wings for him and his son, Icarus, out of feathers and wax so they could fly out of the labyrinth.

Daedalus made it. Icarus did not. He flew too close to the sun and the heat melted the wax off his wings. He fell and drowned in the sea below where they were flying.

For a legendary inventor, I must say, that was the DUMBEST invention ever. Kids, do not try this at home. Daedalus made it, but you sure won't.

Happy D to Z, luvs!

  1. I just watched a documentary on the labyrinth the other day, but I can't remember if they mentioned Daedalus.

  2. Love your theme for this! And I actually have heard of this myth before, but then I did teach Greek mythology to 7th graders for a year or two. :-) If you have time, and want to, you can check out my D post.

  3. The story of Icarus is one of my favorites. So tragic -- poor Deadalus loses his son. Youth truly is wasted on the young!

    I'm participating in AtoZ, too.
    See you around!

  4. o.0 I love greek myth!! And Daedalus was one of my favs!! Love your theme...I'm scrolling through so don't mind me when I comment on long past ones :D
