Unknown Greek Myth #5: Echo

Echo-o-o was a nymph from Greek myths-myths-myths...but that's the only thing that is agreed upon-on-on. Depending on where the story originated-ted-ted, there are a few instances that turned this nymph into nothing but a rebounding voice-voice-voice.

In one-one-one tradition, Echo rejected the god Pan's attentions and he was so-so-so enraged that he had her killed, leaving only-ly-ly her voice.

In another tradition-on-on, Hera took the nymph's voice for-for-for helping Zeus have affairs with other nymphs. She was only able to repeat-peat-peat the words of others from time to time.

In other lore-lore-lore, Echo was said to have been madly in love-love-love with Narcissus, but when the love went unrequited, she wasted away-way-way into nothingness leaving only her voice behind-hind-hind.

Yeah, I just did that.

Happy E to Z!

  6. I named my basset hound after Echo. Don't ask me why though. My friend and I looked up different goddesses in the sixth grade and that's the name that stuck to my roly-poly decidedly not nymph-like dog.

    1. I really like that name! And that fact that your pup is roly-poly is even cuter!

  7. too funny! I've always heard the one from Hera and she was trapped in a cave when she "died" leaving only her voice. :P
