After discovering her powers, Riley Bale is taken to Lionhead—a small island town that has previously banned outsiders for over a 100 years.

Sum the character Riley up in three words.
Determined, Tough, Curious

If The Serenity Compound were a movie, who would be the perfect actress to play Alva Martin and why?
I think Elle Fanning would be great!

I think the cover of Love and Horror is great! How did you come up with such a simple, yet intriguing cover design?

My boyfriend (Danny Hynes) is an artist, so I sort of left it up to him! I wanted something simple. He layered about 3 drawings on top of each other to give it a bit of a haunting feel.

Name the title of any book that best describes you as a person.
Quiet (by Susan Cain).

Totally Random WTF Question: If you could keep a mythical creature as a pet, which one would you have?
I know this isn’t the most creative answer in the world, but I would love to have a dragon. As long as it didn’t try to kill me.

Would this dragon work for you? He seems rather harmless :P

I’m 26. I was born and raised in New Jersey, but I’m now living in Burbank, California. I went to Montclair State University, where I majored in Anthropology and minored in Film. I’m currently working on the sequel to Lionhead, Requiem, which should be released later this year.

My favorite authors include Stephen King, Haruki Murakami, Neil Gaiman, and Alex Garland. Filmmakers that inspire me are not limited to Quentin Tarantino, Spike Jonze, Christopher Nolan, David O. Russell, Steve McQueen, David Cronenberg, and Steven Spielberg. I love good storytellers!

Favorite Book: The Beach by Alex Garland
Favorite Movie: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Favorite Television Show: Breaking Bad

Thirteen-year-old Riley Bale has always been a monster. At least that’s how all the other kids have always treated her. After being plagued with a mysterious illness for much of her young life and living as an orphan with her two cold and distant older sisters, Riley has dealt with being bullied by becoming a bully herself.

During a violent after school attack, Riley learns she’s being protected by forces beyond her control. She is tested and then invited to attend Lionhead Shifter School, which she accepts on blind faith alone, along with the desire to understand where her parents came from before they disappeared. Once Riley arrives in Lionhead, she not only discovers her true identity as a shifter, but appears to fit right in with the other new kids.

Riley quickly realizes that everything is not quite what it seems. Amidst an unusual hatred that arises between the two teenage boys she’s become closest with, Oliver Preston and Ash Plum, she must learn why the small island community has previously disallowed outsiders for over a hundred years.

Alva Martin, a strong fighter and fixer of old computers, is only interested in joining the Verus Army when she turns eighteen. When she is sent to a training camp with her two best friends, a violent plane crash leaves them stranded in an entirely new world. Miraculously alive and relatively unharmed, they are rescued by a strange man named Alexander who brings them back to his compound in Shiloh and promises to keep them safe until help can arrive.

After only a few hours, Alva begins to feel how oppressive and unsettling their temporary home is. She learns that they believe in The Culling, a fancy way of saying that the world will end in two weeks due to a destructive race of aliens. Alexander believes it is his job to rebuild the world in a better way, along with the help of his best student. The young boy, Barnabas, eventually views Alva as his saving grace and tries to enlist her in his attempt to break free.

With a touch of sci-fi and strong psychological elements, The Serenity Compound follows Alva and Barnabas through their intense journeys of self-discovery, which leads to the unraveling of everything they’ve ever believed in and the creation of a new society.
