What you want the most just might kill you…

Medical research scientist Elena Arcos has always lived her life under the radar. When she is shot in a convenience store robbery, Elena finds herself rocketed into supernatural insanity courtesy of a sexy immortal law enforcer. He’s convinced she’s some kind of freaky half-vampire thing and that her deceased dad was the real deal: a blood sucking monster. Yeah, right.

Nikolai Itzov never anticipated battling the urge to kiss the offspring of his father’s murderer. As a Slayer, an elite law enforcer descended from Azrael himself, his orders from the Underveil General are clear: Kill her or die.

Nikolai and Elena find themselves in a life and death battle to stop a plot designed to lift the Underveil and enslave humans. With her analytical mind and his centuries of training, they might be able to foil the plot with their lives and maybe their hearts intact. But in order to succeed, he must help her become the very thing he hates the most: an Undead.

This was a fun read with plenty of hilarious moments and snarky commentary. I liked that because sometimes romance books take themselves too seriously and they suck all the fun out of reading. But this book wasn't like that at all and I enjoyed it.

I'm not as big a fan of vampires as I've been in the past, but I was cool with it. I'm a fan of almost anything paranormal in my books, so honestly, any being would have done for me. I loved that the sexy Nikolai was descended from the angel of death. Thought that was pretty cool, but maybe I missed something, but I don't remember being told exactly what Nikolai was. Was that the point or did I just totally blow past it?

Anyway, the romance was fun even if it was a little rushed. I thought Nikolai and Elena had a nice chemistry going on. I loved the initial push and pull, you know, the chase. That's always the best part. It just took Elena some time to come to her senses. She was annoying at times as she kept jumping to conclusions without thinking. But overall she was cool, and at times, she was hilarious. So was Nikolai. At times I found him as infuriating as Elena did, but I couldn't stay mad at him. Nikolai's only issue was his one track mind. Couldn't seem to focus on more than one thing at a time. It was kind of cute, kind of annoying, and that one track mind was exactly what landed the Underveil in the situation it's in in this book.

I have to mention one character I really liked. Stefan Darvaak, the Time Folder. I just love smart asses who hold all the cards, and he was exactly that. Every scene he was in was pure entertainment. His interactions with Nikolai were just fun!

But overall, a nice book but not the best paranormal romance I've ever read. Would I read more by this author? For sure. Next book in the series? Highly likely. Would I recommend? Yup. Sure do :)
