Dishin' It Up with @Cara_Addison, author of The Fortuitous Pen

Cara Addison

Name three songs that could be on The Fortuitous Pen soundtrack.
Music is powerful. When I start on a manuscript, I create a playlist for that novel. As I write, I add songs that reflect the characters and situations that unfold as I write. I find myself listening to that playlist over and over as I write and edit.

Three of my favourite songs on The Fortuitous Pen playlist are:

Jason Derulo, Trumpets. It has great rhythm, beat, and fantastic sexual innuendo.

K-Naan's Hurt Me Tomorrow is the song that instantly comes to mind as I think of chapter 15 when Brett and Austin have an epic fight.

One Republic, Counting Stars is another song that encapsulates the depth of connection between these deeply devoted characters in The Fortuitous Pen.

What are three essential elements of a romance book?
A. Characters that are relatable.

B. Humor. Not common in a romance novel, but for me it's an essential ingredient and speaks volumes about the author's talent.

C. Hot and steamy sex scenes that can arouse the reader and draw them into the scene

What would you consider your personal motto to be?
William Shakespeare's quote, "Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them," is one that I personally identify with. I make it a daily personal mission to achieve greatness. Mediocrity has no place here.

How do you battle writers's block?
Fortunately, I've yet to deal with writer's block. I have the opposite problem...too any ideas, characters, conversations, scenes, and situations to write down and not enough time in the day to purge them from my imagination.

If I do ever encounter writer's block, I'm sure some conversations with my online fans will generate enough ideas to get me back to the computer.

What influences you, in writing and life in general?
I would say that there are few outside influences that drive me. My own intrinsic need to accomplish success is a powerful influence for my writing, my work in the corporate world, and the very important task of raising two daughters to be independent thinkers.

I’m the accidental author.

In so many ways, becoming a published author happened by chance.

For years, I’ve worked in the corporate world.  My degrees are in business.  Essentially, I’m a problem solver for corporations and government.  So, you can imagine how much of a shift it was for me to sit down and write fiction.

During the summer of 2013, I put pen to paper.  I let my sexy imagination loose and before I knew it I’d filled a more than a few pages.  The characters came to life and a story began to take shape.

And so began, the greatest chapter of my life.

Writing has been cathartic.  Becoming published has been exhilarating.

This journey isn’t over.  I continue to write, as time permits.  Another manuscript is in the works.
