Why Nikki Loves Writing Fantasy

A couple of things contribute to my preference for writing books that have strong fantasy elements.

The first is a great love of world building. I do sometimes write in the world we know. My Clockwork Enterprises series, for example, takes place in an alternate version of Victorian London. The Forbidden Things series is otherworld epic fantasy. I love building worlds. Everything from the various cultures, terrain, military and political landscapes, religions, etc. are mine to create. Once I’ve created all of that, I get to mix in fantastical elements, such as magic (or ascard in this series) in such a way that it can blend in as seamlessly for the people of that world as the air they breathe.

The other thing that influences my preference is a combination of a fascination with the psychology of human relationships and that aforementioned love of world building. When I create my own world or alter the one we live in with some kind of fantastical elements, I get to explore how the different people I put in that world will cope with and relate to the unique challenges and opportunities that world offers. I find it incredibly fun and exciting to play around with such things in my stories. Writing a new book with a new world and a new set of rules is always an adventure.

Nikki lives in the magnificent Pacific Northwest with her husband, two horses, two cats, and one slightly crazy dog. She feeds her imagination by sitting on the ocean in her kayak gazing out across the never-ending water or hanging from a rope in a cave, embraced by darkness and the sound of dripping water. She finds peace through practicing iaido or shooting her longbow.
